Trek Overview
The Rush Lake trek is moderate-to-strenuous. It’s due to altitude gain and glacier crossings. It’s a great start for those moving from the Himalayas to the Karakoram.
- Duration: 5–7 Days Trek + travel from base
- Max Altitude: 4,694 m, 15,400 ft above sea level
- Difficulty: Moderate+
- Glacier crossings required
- Distance: ~50 km Round trip from Hopar
- Start/End Point: Hopar Village
Altitude Safety Note: Headache, nausea, dizziness, and disrupted sleep. If symptoms get worse, descend. No summit is worth risking your life.
The Route:
The Rush Lake trek starts in a valley and goes up to the glacial wilderness. This journey feels earned, not forced. You’ll know what’s ahead on the way back, which is comforting at high altitudes. Hoper is a terraced village(2,600–2,800m), a 45-minute ride from Hunza.
The village has guesthouses, fresh food, a mobile signal, snacks, a guide, and a porter. Enjoy the views of the Bualtar Glacier from the village edge. Here, the Karakoram scenery turns into terrain.
Short Itinerary
- Day 1: Hopar → Barpo Giram Camp (~3,000m).
Cross the Bualtar Glacier (4–5 hours). This ice mass needs careful route-finding. Reach the valley between the Bualtar and Barpu glaciers. Overnight at Barpo Giram. - Day 2: Barpo Giram → Brikchour (~3,400m).
Cross the Barpu Glacier, which is easier than the Bualtar. Pass Chukutans, a shepherd settlement. Walk through meadows with views of Ultar Sar, Diran, and Spantik. Overnight at Brikchour. - Day 3: Brikchour → Rush Lake (~4,000m)
Climb through meadows and rocky terrain. Acclimatisation is key here. Take your time and breathe deeply. Overnight at high camp. - Day 4: Summit Day → Rush Lake (4,694m).
The final push to the lake. Crest the ridge for a breathtaking view. The lake is glacially fed and impossibly blue. Descend to high camp or Brikchour for the night. - Days 5–6: Return to Hopar via the same route. Descend through the glaciers, now familiar and beautiful. Return to Hopar with tired legs.
On a clear day, you can see K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrums. The Hunza wall stretches from east to west. Hispar La shines white in the distance. This view is unforgettable.
Scenic Highlights
Every day on the Rush Lake trek is special. You’ll see more than just the lake. Here’s what the trail offers:
What You’ll Witness Along the Trail
- The Bualtar Glacier is like a moving river of ice. Walking on it feels like stepping back in time.
- From the upper trail, you’ll see Karakoram peaks. Spantik, Malubiting, and Ultar Sar are always in view.
- At Chukutans and other stops, meet the Nagar Valley’s herders. They have lived here for centuries.
- The lake at dawn or dusk is breathtaking. The peaks turn amber, and the water mirrors them perfectly.
- From Rush Peak ridge, see K2 and Broad Peak. It’s one of the few places you can see these mountains up close.
Best Time to Trek Rush Lake
- June to Sept is the best time to trek. June and Sept are cooler with fewer people. July and Aug are busier but still quiet.
- October is beautiful but risky. It might snow early, blocking the passes. Always have a plan and a guide.
- Summer days have temperatures between 5°C-15°C. Nights are below 0°C. A warm sleeping bag is essential
Getting to Rush Lake is easier than many Karakoram treks. Here’s what you need to know:
Getting There
Drive from Gilgit to Hunza on the KKH (~2.5 hrs). Then, take a jeep to Hopar Village (~45 min).
Accommodation
Guesthouses are available in Hopar Village. Bring or rent a good tent for the trek.
Guides & Porters
A guide is recommended to know the route and glacier conditions. Porters carry your gear; guides navigate and ensure safety.
Gear Essentials
Boots, trekking poles, layers, a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, a headlamp, water bottles, Diamox, and a first aid kit.
Food & Water
Buy food in Karimabad, Gilgit, before Hopar. Glacial streams provide water. Locals may offer tea at shepherd settlements.
Connectivity
Mobile signal is limited to Hopar village and some lower sections. Above the glaciers, you’re off-grid.
Go While It’s Still This Quiet
Rush Lake is a secret worth keeping. The trek is challenging, but the reward is worth it. Pack smart, acclimatise, hire a guide, and respect the Karakoram. It will give you something far richer in return.
